Job transitions are hard, and that’s okay

FYI: this is not going to be a typical first day post.

I forgot how hard it can be to transition into a new position. I love my new coworkers and I’m super excited about the job, but any career transition involves some uncomfortable elements, including:

  • Getting used to a new environment

  • Getting to know new people

  • Learning processes and tasks that are totally new to you

Let’s be honest here: all that unfamiliarity is challenging and it took a toll on me today. I really like the job so far and will appreciate it even more as time goes on, but starting any new job definitely comes with the feeling of not knowing what you’re doing, leading to some self-doubt and unease (especially for anxiety-prone individuals). That’s where I’m at right now.

Another element: I’m working in operations (in addition to marketing), which is a completely new field for me. Packaging, shipping, and maintaining inventory aren’t things I’m used to. Honestly, I’m really excited to familiarize myself with the company’s processes and add operations to my skillset, but stepping out of your comfort zone is…well, uncomfortable. I’m just feeling a bit overwhelmed today.

If you’ve seen Season 2 of You on Netflix, you might be familiar with a coping technique presented to the main character, Joe. An acquaintance tells him that it’s fine to have bad thoughts as long as you follow them up with “and I’m okay with that.” So, let’s rephrase:

I’m just feeling a bit overwhelmed today, and I’m okay with that.

I know this feeling won’t last; I’ll get used to the job and I think I’ll really love it, I’ll move on from my old position after tying up some loose ends, I’ll get into the swing of freelancing, and figure out a solid plan for Barney (my dog). All that will happen, but not this second. This feeling is only temporary.
