Prepping for my first day at my new job

I start a new job in three days. THREE DAYS.

It’s wild, honestly. I interviewed almost a month ago now and left nearly in tears at how much I wanted the job. Now, I’m starting in three days.

Right now, as I wrote about earlier this week, I’m having a bit of imposter syndrome. I’m also worried that I’ve built it up too much in my head, but I think that’s just nerves; I’ve never had an interview where I clicked with the women in the office as well as I clicked with the women of BaeBlu. New friendships and jobs are the good kind of nerve-racking. I’m nervous, but excited to get into the swing of things!

This week and over the weekend, I’ve been preparing for my new job with tasks big and small. Reminder: I’m also jumping more deeply into freelancing, so I have to prep for that, too.

Here are some of the ways I’ve been preparing for my new position:

Taking some time off

One of the best pieces of advice my mom gave me about leaving my job was to make sure I took a few days off before starting the new one. Really, she told me to take a week off in between, but by the time I got the chance to tell my boss I was quitting, I could only take two days off before my starting date to give a full two weeks’ notice.

Thursday, I put together a dresser that arrived and worked on decorating my room. Since my boyfriend left for horseshoeing school a week ago, I decided to “girl it up” in here. In reality, I just want to make it a more pleasant place to be and a little more functional, especially since I’ll be working from home while I freelance.

Friday, I went shopping for some work clothes and groceries. COWGIRL was pretty casual, and it seems that BaeBlu is the same, which is comforting. Jeans, baby! However, operations assistants such as myself are required to wear flats for safety reasons, so I decided to get some more BaeBlu-approved footwear. And, of course, that led to some apparel purchasing just for a fall closet refresh. While grocery shopping, I got some meal prep items to try out for dinners and lunches. I’ve never done that before, so I’m kind of excited!

Spending time with family & friends

I also visited my family on Friday just to spend some time with them, and went shopping in Anthem, Arizona with some friends on Saturday. Yes, I know it’s a lot of shopping; my bank account is kicking me a little bit, but I think it’s important to feel confident and prepared as you enter a new life stage, and, in my case, buying some new things is part of that prep.

P.S. It’s been a bit tough for me to make and keep up with friends in Arizona so far, but I feel so good about my friendships right now. So happy about that!

Self-care

A huge one. I’ve been taking Barney on two walks a day to get out and about, cleaning up around the house, and watching The Office. While I don’t think I’ll be quite as stressed with my new professional ventures (the publishing industry can be a lot when there’s a deadline), I have to remember what I learned this summer: I need to do some things just for me, even if I don’t think I need to. Another part of my job prep is getting that into my head.
