10 Questions to Help You Find Your Target Audience

Do you know your target audience? Okay… but do you really?

The key to selling (on social and everywhere else) is to know your target audience backwards, forwards, and sideways. You need to know them to communicate with them effectively, in a way that will appeal specifically to them.

And let me say this, too: Your target audience is NOT everyone. If you're speaking to everyone, you're speaking to no one. You need to get SUPER SPECIFIC about your target audience so you can use what you know about them to cater your language, visuals, and overall marketing strategy toward relating (and selling) to them.

  1. What is their gender?

You can communicate with genders based on what language and visuals are most appealing to them. Are they male? Female? Non-binary? Cis? Genderfluid?

  2. Where do they live?

Are you targeting a specific country? State? City? Neighborhood? People may use specific terms or have certain interests depending on where they live.

  3. How old are they?

HUGELY important. Your customer's age will determine what generational topics they can relate to, where they are online, and what language and visuals will appeal to them. If your target audience is 60+, you might not want to hit them with a “it’s the ___ for me.”

  4. What people are in their life?

Are they single or married? Do they have a lot of friends, or just a few? Are they parents? Step-parents? Grandparents? These questions will help you better determine how to relate to them.

  5. What are they like?

Describe their personality. Based on this, you can start to develop your brand voice. For example, kind people might relate to warm and welcoming language and visuals.

  6. How much $ do they make?

If your products are on the pricier side, you don't want to target people that are making minimum wage. Think about how much they make and how that will impact how you communicate with them.

  7. Where do they work?

Figure out what they're doing on the day-to-day. This will help you determine the best time to post to fit with their schedule, as well as messaging topics.

  8. What are their fears?

What keeps them up at night? Talk about this in a way that shows you understand them. And, show how you/your product can eliminate this fear.

  9. What are their pains?

Pains are things that they dislike. Maybe they need a more pleasant or efficient way to do something. Tell them how your product can remedy this pain.

  10. What are their goals?

Things they want to achieve; things that they're striving for. Use these to show how your product can help them get there.
